Korea Taxi Apps for Foreigners: k.ride vs Kakao T vs Uber & TABA

Getting a taxi in Korea is usually easy, but choosing the right taxi app as a foreign visitor can be confusing. k.ride, Kakao T, Uber and TABA all work differently when it comes to foreign phone numbers, international credit cards, languages, booking options and fees.

For most short-term visitors, the best app depends on what matters most to you. k.ride is designed specifically for international travelers, Kakao T gives you access to Korea’s largest taxi platform, Uber may feel familiar if you already use it at home, and TABA is another tourist-focused option.

This guide compares the major Korea taxi apps for foreigners, including payment methods, Korean phone number requirements, service fees, airport use, late-night rides and which app is best in different situations.

Quick Answer: Which Taxi App Should You Use in Korea?

If you want the simplest option as a short-term visitor, k.ride is a good place to start. It is built for international travelers, supports foreign-issued cards, and lets you search destinations and communicate with drivers without relying on Korean.

However, it is not the only option. Kakao T can be worth setting up if you want direct access to Korea’s main taxi platform, and it now supports several major foreign-issued credit and debit cards for taxi payments. Uber is convenient if you already have an Uber account, while TABA is another traveler-focused alternative with international payment support.

A practical approach is to install at least two apps before your trip. Start with k.ride or Kakao T, then keep Uber or TABA as a backup in case one app has fewer available taxis or a higher estimated fare at the time you need a ride.

Korea Taxi Apps Compared at a Glance

The four major taxi apps available to international travelers in Korea have different strengths. The biggest differences are how you sign up, which foreign payment methods are accepted, whether the app is designed specifically for tourists, and whether extra service or call fees can apply.

k.ride: Easiest for Most Short-Term Visitors

k.ride is Kakao Mobility’s taxi app designed specifically for international travelers. It connects travelers to Kakao T’s taxi network while providing a more tourist-friendly interface, multilingual destination search, translated driver chat and international payment options.

You can sign up using a mobile number, email or supported social account. The app supports English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese, while destination search and automatic driver chat translation support many more languages.

One of the biggest advantages is cashless payment. k.ride supports credit and debit cards, and PayPal is also available. You can see an estimated fare before requesting a taxi, which can make the process easier if you are unfamiliar with Korean taxi fares.

However, k.ride is not always the cheapest way to access the Kakao taxi network. For taxi calls in Korea, k.ride’s official pricing terms currently include a 10% service fee on applicable fares and fees. Some vehicle types can also use flexible pricing depending on demand, traffic conditions and location.

For short-term visitors, that extra cost may be worth paying for easier setup, translated communication and international payment support. But if price matters more than convenience, it is worth comparing the same trip in Kakao T or another taxi app before booking.

Kakao T: Wider Options and Often Better Value

Kakao T is Korea’s main mobility app and one of the most widely used ways to call a taxi across the country. Unlike k.ride, it is designed primarily for the Korean market, so the setup and interface may feel less straightforward for a first-time international visitor.

Foreign travelers can still use Kakao T. The service has users registered with overseas phone numbers, and Kakao T currently allows foreign-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express credit or debit cards to be registered for supported taxi payments.

One advantage of Kakao T is access to a wider range of taxi options. Depending on your location, you may see regular taxis as well as options such as Blue, Venti, Deluxe or Black. Availability and pricing vary by city, time and vehicle type.

Kakao T can also be worth comparing with k.ride before you book. Both services connect to Kakao Mobility’s taxi network, but k.ride applies its own service fee structure for international travelers. For the same general trip, the final price shown in the two apps may therefore be different.

The main drawback is convenience. Registration and verification can be less intuitive for visitors, and some parts of the app are designed around services mainly used by residents. If you only need a few taxi rides during a short trip, k.ride may be easier. If you plan to use taxis frequently or want more local vehicle options, Kakao T is worth setting up.

Uber Taxi in Korea: Convenient If You Already Use Uber

Uber can be one of the easiest taxi options in Korea if you already use the app in your home country. You can keep using the same Uber account rather than creating an account for a Korea-specific taxi service.

In Korea, Uber mainly connects passengers with licensed local taxis. This means the experience is different from countries where UberX and other private rideshare vehicles are common. Depending on your location, the app may show options such as Uber Taxi, Standard Taxi, Speed Call, Green or Deluxe Taxi.

A foreign phone number can be used with an Uber account. Uber states that the verification process is the same for foreign numbers, although you need to be able to receive the required SMS verification code.

Payment can also be handled through the app using a payment method saved to your Uber account. Some taxi trips may offer an in-person payment option as well. Because payment availability can depend on your account and ride option, check that your preferred card is accepted in the app before relying on Uber as your only taxi app in Korea.

Uber is especially useful as a backup because you may already have your account, destination history and payment details set up before arriving in Korea. It is also available well beyond Seoul, including major cities such as Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Incheon and Ulsan, with availability in many additional areas around the country.

TABA: A Tourist-Focused Alternative

TABA is another taxi app built with international travelers in mind. It was developed in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and T-money, and the current app offers taxi services for travelers visiting Korea.

The app supports English for its interface, address search and customer support. You can create an account using a phone number, Google account or Apple account, which can make registration easier for travelers who do not have a Korean mobile number.

TABA also accepts a wide range of international cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, JCB and UnionPay.

The service now includes more than basic city taxi calls. The app advertises airport transfers, city rides and intercity travel, with vehicle options including standard 4-seaters, luxury 4-seaters and larger 5-seat vehicles.

TABA can be useful as a backup if you have trouble getting a taxi through another app or want to compare available vehicles and estimated prices. However, actual driver availability can still vary by location and time, so it is better to keep another taxi app installed as well rather than relying on TABA alone.

k.ride vs Kakao T: Why Can the Price Be Different?

k.ride and Kakao T are both operated by Kakao Mobility, but the price you see for a similar taxi trip may not be exactly the same.

The main reason is that k.ride has its own service fee structure for international travelers. For taxi services in Korea, k.ride currently applies a 10% service fee to applicable fares and fees. This additional charge is part of k.ride’s international ride-hailing service and supports service operation and customer support.

That does not mean every k.ride quote will simply be exactly 10% higher than every Kakao T quote. Taxi prices can also change depending on the vehicle type, local fare rules, demand, traffic conditions, reservation fees and any call fee attached to the option you select.

For example, a regular taxi and a larger Kakao T Venti vehicle do not use the same pricing structure. Some premium or high-demand options can also use flexible pricing, so comparing two different vehicle types across the apps can give a misleading result.

If both apps are available to you, compare the final estimated price for the same pickup point, destination and similar taxi type before requesting the ride. Kakao T may offer better value in some situations, while k.ride may be worth the extra cost if you prefer easier foreign-language support and international traveler features.

Always check the final price shown in the app before confirming, especially during busy periods or when booking a larger or premium vehicle.

Can You Use a Foreign Credit Card?

Yes. International travelers can use foreign payment methods with several major taxi apps in Korea, so you do not necessarily need a Korean credit card.

k.ride supports cashless automatic payment using registered credit or debit cards and mobile payment methods. PayPal is also available in the current version of the app. Because individual card authorization can still fail depending on the issuer or payment network, it is a good idea to register your payment method before you actually need a taxi.

Kakao T now officially accepts overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express credit and debit cards for taxi payments. This is an important change from older travel advice that said a Korean-issued card was required.

TABA also advertises broad international card support, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, JCB and UnionPay.

Uber payments can be made through a supported payment method saved to your Uber account, and Korean Uber Taxi also offers in-app card payment and, for some taxi trips, on-site payment options. Check the payment method shown in the app before confirming your ride.

Even if your main card works, carrying a second card is still useful. A payment can occasionally be declined because of the card issuer, fraud protection or an overseas transaction setting rather than the taxi app itself.

Do You Need a Korean Phone Number?

You do not necessarily need a Korean phone number to use a taxi app in Korea, but the signup and verification process varies considerably between apps.

k.ride is designed for international travelers. You can begin registration with a mobile number, email or supported social account such as Google or Apple. However, k.ride still collects a mobile phone number as required account information, so you should have access to a number that can receive any verification messages required during signup.

Kakao T is more complicated. Kakao Mobility’s own usage data shows Kakao T users verified with phone numbers from countries outside Korea, so a +82 Korean number is not universally required. However, Kakao T uses account and phone verification, and some setup or payment-related steps may be more difficult for short-term visitors using an overseas number.

Uber is straightforward if you already have an account from your home country. You can continue using the mobile number associated with that account, as long as you can receive any SMS verification codes that Uber requests.

TABA allows registration using a phone number, Google account or Apple account and is specifically designed for international travelers. A Korean-specific phone number is not advertised as a requirement for signup.

Whichever app you choose, complete the registration process before you urgently need a taxi. This is especially important if you are arriving late at night or plan to use a taxi immediately after landing in Korea.

Which Taxi App Should You Use at Incheon Airport?

If you plan to take a taxi from Incheon International Airport, k.ride and Uber are especially convenient because both currently support airport pickup services directly in their apps.

k.ride now offers advance pickup reservations at both Incheon Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. This can be useful if you want your airport ride arranged before landing, especially when traveling with luggage or arriving at an inconvenient time.

Uber also supports taxi pickups from Incheon Airport. After requesting a ride, the app provides directions to the designated pickup area, and several vehicle options may be available depending on the time and your needs. Uber also offers advance airport reservations for eligible ride options.

You do not have to use an app, however. Incheon Airport has official taxi stands outside the arrivals level at both terminals, including standard, deluxe, jumbo and international taxis. The airport specifically advises travelers to use designated taxi stands and avoid unofficial solicitors approaching passengers inside or around the terminal.

For travelers heading to Seoul, a regular airport taxi is usually easy to find without a reservation. If you arrive late at night, remember that night surcharges apply between 10 PM and 4 AM, with the exact surcharge depending on the time and taxi jurisdiction.

If you want the easiest setup before your trip, reserve through k.ride or Uber in advance. If you prefer to decide after landing, compare the app estimate with the official taxi queue and choose the option that works best for your arrival time, group size and luggage.

Which Taxi App Is Better Late at Night?

Late at night, the best taxi app is often the one that can actually find you an available taxi at a reasonable price. Demand can rise quickly after the subway stops running, especially around nightlife districts such as Hongdae, Itaewon and Gangnam on Friday and Saturday nights.

In Seoul, regular sedan taxis currently have a 20% late-night surcharge from 10 PM to 11 PM, a 40% surcharge from 11 PM to 2 AM, and a 20% surcharge again from 2 AM to 4 AM. Taxi fare and surcharge rules are different outside Seoul, so check the local fare or the estimate shown in your app when traveling in other cities.

Late-night traffic near Hongdae Station in Seoul

Do not assume the first app you open will always be the cheapest or fastest. k.ride, Kakao T, Uber and TABA may show different vehicle availability, estimated fares or paid call options at the same time.

k.ride can be convenient if you want multilingual support and automatic payment, but its service fee still applies. Kakao T gives you access to more of Kakao Mobility’s local taxi options, while Uber can be a useful second app if Kakao-based services are having difficulty finding a nearby taxi.

For premium or larger vehicles, pricing can work differently from a standard metered taxi. Some Kakao Mobility vehicle types use flexible pricing based on demand and traffic, which can make a late-night ride significantly more expensive during busy periods.

A practical strategy is to keep at least two taxi apps installed. Before confirming a ride, compare the estimated fare, vehicle type, pickup time and any additional call or service fee shown on the final booking screen.

If you are going out in Seoul, arrange your ride before leaving the venue rather than waiting until you are standing on a busy street with low battery and no backup transportation.

Traveling With Large Luggage or a Group

A standard Korean taxi may be large enough for one or two travelers with normal luggage, but four passengers plus several large suitcases can easily exceed the practical cargo space of a regular sedan taxi.

For example, Uber’s current Incheon Airport guidance says a standard taxi usually accommodates up to four riders and may hold around two to three suitcases. However, luggage capacity is not guaranteed because it depends on the vehicle model and the number of passengers.

If you are traveling with several people or large bags, look for a larger vehicle option rather than assuming everything will fit into a standard taxi.

Kakao T offers Venti, a larger van-style taxi designed for passengers who need more space. In k.ride, the corresponding larger vehicle category may appear as Comfort, depending on availability. These vehicles can be useful for airport transfers, families and small groups, although fares can be higher and flexible pricing may apply.

Uber also offers larger vehicle options in Korea in selected areas. Uber Taxi XL was introduced specifically for travelers and groups carrying more luggage, with vehicles able to accommodate up to three 24-inch suitcases under the service standard. A separate call fee may apply even though the taxi fare itself follows the regular taxi fare structure.

For an airport arrival, Incheon Airport also has official oversized taxis. The airport currently lists Deluxe/Jumbo taxis as 9-seater vehicles, with designated taxi stands at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Do not choose a vehicle based only on the number of seats. A group of four with four large checked suitcases may need more luggage space than a five-person group carrying only small bags. Check the vehicle type in the app and contact the driver after matching if you are unsure whether everything will fit.

If one vehicle is not large enough, booking two standard taxis can sometimes be simpler than trying to find a large vehicle during a busy period.

Using Taxi Apps Outside Seoul

Taxi apps are not limited to Seoul, but availability can vary much more once you travel to smaller cities or rural areas. An app that finds a taxi within a few minutes in central Seoul may have fewer nearby drivers in a smaller city, on Jeju’s outskirts or late at night.

Kakao T is widely used throughout Korea, and k.ride connects international travelers to Kakao Mobility taxi services. However, the vehicle types and taxi products shown in the app can differ depending on where you are.

Uber also operates far beyond Seoul. Its current Korea service list includes major destinations such as Busan, Daegu, Daejeon, Incheon, Ulsan, Jeju City and Seogwipo, as well as many smaller cities around the country. The exact taxi options available still depend on your location.

TABA advertises city rides, airport transfers and intercity travel for international visitors in Korea. However, it does not publish a simple nationwide list showing the same level of on-demand taxi availability in every destination, so check the app before depending on it outside major tourist areas.

Jeju is a particularly good example of why you should not rely on a single taxi app. Taxis are easy to use for short trips around Jeju City or Seogwipo, but attractions can be spread far apart and return taxis may be harder to find in quieter areas.

For regional travel, keep at least two taxi apps installed and check availability before leaving a major station, airport or city center. If you are heading somewhere remote, also consider the return trip before getting out of the taxi.

How to Avoid Common Taxi App Problems

Taxi apps make getting around Korea much easier, but a few small mistakes can cause missed pickups, canceled rides or payment problems.

Check your pickup pin carefully before requesting the taxi. Large subway stations, shopping malls, airports and hotels can have several entrances on different streets. A driver may be only a few hundred meters away but unable to reach you if the pin is on the opposite side of a large building or intersection.

After a driver accepts your request, check the vehicle information shown in the app. Confirm the license plate and vehicle details before getting into the taxi, especially in crowded pickup areas where several taxis may arrive at the same time.

If the driver contacts you, do not ignore the message or call simply because you do not speak Korean. k.ride includes translated driver communication, while translation apps can also help when using other taxi services. A driver may be trying to confirm exactly where you are waiting.

Avoid repeatedly canceling after a driver has already been assigned. Depending on the app and vehicle type, a cancellation or no-show fee can apply. k.ride, for example, has different cancellation fees for Standard, Deluxe, Comfort and Luxury services, and reservations have separate cancellation rules.

If your card is declined, try another registered payment method before requesting the ride again. A foreign card may fail because international transactions are disabled, the issuer blocks the transaction as suspicious, or the card information needs to be updated. Uber specifically advises travelers to check with their bank if an overseas transaction is rejected for these reasons.

Destination searches can also cause problems when Korean businesses have similar names or multiple branches. Check the destination on the map rather than relying only on the business name. For a hotel, attraction or restaurant, confirming the neighborhood and street location before requesting the taxi can prevent an expensive trip to the wrong branch.

Finally, make sure your phone has mobile data and enough battery for the entire ride. You may need the app to communicate with the driver, confirm your pickup location, follow the route or complete a payment.

FAQ

Can foreigners use Kakao T in Korea?

Yes. Foreign visitors can use Kakao T, and Kakao Mobility has confirmed users registered with overseas phone numbers. Kakao T also currently accepts overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express cards for taxi payments. However, signup and verification may be less straightforward than with an app designed specifically for international travelers.

Is Uber available in Korea?

Yes. Uber operates in Korea, but the service mainly connects passengers with licensed Korean taxis rather than the private rideshare vehicles commonly associated with UberX in some countries. Availability and vehicle options vary by city and time.

Is k.ride more expensive than Kakao T?

It can be. k.ride currently applies a 10% service fee to applicable Korean taxi fares and fees, while some vehicle types also use flexible pricing. However, the final difference is not always exactly 10% because vehicle type, traffic, demand, call fees and other charges can also affect the price.

Do Korean taxi apps accept foreign credit cards?

Several do. k.ride supports international payment methods, Kakao T officially accepts overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express cards for taxi services, and TABA supports several major international card networks. Uber users can also use supported payment methods available in their Uber account.

Can I get a taxi at Incheon Airport without an app?

Yes. You do not need a taxi app to leave Incheon Airport. Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have official taxi stands where you can take regular, deluxe, jumbo and other authorized taxis. An app is mainly useful if you want to reserve in advance, compare options or pay automatically.

Final Thoughts

There is no single taxi app that is best for every traveler in Korea.

If you want the simplest setup, k.ride is a practical starting point for most short-term visitors. If you want access to more local taxi options and are comfortable with a slightly more complicated setup, Kakao T is worth installing as well.

Uber is useful if you already have an account and want a familiar backup option, while TABA gives international travelers another alternative with foreign-card support.

The most practical approach is to install at least two apps before your trip, register your payment methods in advance, and compare the final fare and pickup time before booking.

For most visitors, k.ride + Kakao T or k.ride + Uber is a good combination to have ready before arriving in Korea.
