Busan to Gyeongju: KTX vs Bus, Costs & Best Routes

Traveling from Busan to Gyeongju is easy, but the fastest option is not always the most convenient one. KTX can cover the rail journey in about 30 minutes, while intercity buses take longer but may make more sense depending on where you are staying in Busan and where you want to start sightseeing in Gyeongju.

The best choice can be different for travelers staying near Busan Station, Seomyeon, Haeundae, or western Busan. This guide compares KTX, intercity buses, and day tours, including travel times, departure points, booking options, and which route works best for different itineraries.

If you are still planning what to see, where to stay, or how long to spend in the city, see our Gyeongju Travel Guide before deciding whether to visit as a day trip or stay overnight.

Busan to Gyeongju: Quick Comparison

There is no single best way to travel from Busan to Gyeongju. KTX is the fastest ride, while an intercity bus can be more convenient because it arrives closer to central Gyeongju. Your best option depends largely on where you are staying in Busan.

Do not compare only the ride time. Gyeongju Station is outside the main sightseeing area, while intercity buses arrive near central Gyeongju. A slightly longer bus ride can therefore be more convenient door to door.

The sections below explain each route in detail and show which option makes the most sense from different parts of Busan.

Busan to Gyeongju by KTX

KTX is the fastest option if you are staying near Busan Station. Direct trains typically reach Gyeongju Station in about 30–35 minutes, making the train especially convenient for travelers based around Busan Station, Nampo, or nearby areas.

A standard adult ticket is usually around ₩10,000, but fares and departure times should be checked for your exact travel date. Tickets can be booked through KORAIL’s English-language website, and KORAIL supports payment with overseas-issued credit cards on its foreign-language booking service.

For detailed booking instructions, KORAIL+ information, foreign-card troubleshooting, and sold-out train options, see our KTX Booking in Korea guide.

One important detail is that Gyeongju Station is not in central Gyeongju. The station is about 7.4 km from the Hwangnidan-gil area, so you still need a local bus or taxi after getting off the KTX.

Gyeongju Station where KTX trains from Busan arrive

For Hwangnidan-gil, Gyeongju’s official information currently lists buses 50, 51, 60, 61, 70 and 700 from Gyeongju Station toward Seorabeol Culture Center, followed by roughly a 10-minute walk. If your first stop is in central Gyeongju, include this final transfer when comparing KTX with an intercity bus.

Busan to Gyeongju by Intercity Bus

Intercity buses are often more convenient than KTX if your priority is reaching central Gyeongju with fewer transfers. Buses arrive at Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal, which is only about a 5–10 minute walk from the Hwangnidan-gil area.

Busan has several departure points for Gyeongju, so the best terminal depends on where you are staying. The main options are Nopo, Sasang, and Haeundae.

From Nopo (Busan Dongbu Inter-City Bus Terminal)

The Nopo route is one of the simplest options if you are staying in northern Busan, around Dongnae, or anywhere with easy access to Metro Line 1.

Busan Dongbu Inter-City Bus Terminal is directly connected to Nopo Station, and direct buses to Gyeongju typically take about 50 minutes. Current timetable listings show an adult fare of about ₩7,700, but check the fare and departure time again for your travel date.

The biggest advantage is the arrival location. Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal is much closer to the historic center than Gyeongju Station, and Hwangnidan-gil is roughly a 5–10 minute walk away.

You can check schedules and reserve eligible intercity bus tickets through BusTago.

From Sasang (Busan Seobu Inter-City Bus Terminal)

If you are staying in Sasang or western Busan, departing from Busan Seobu Inter-City Bus Terminal can save you from crossing the city to reach Nopo or Busan Station.

The terminal is next to Sasang Station on Metro Line 2. Direct intercity buses to Gyeongju currently take about one hour, with an adult fare of around ₩9,500.

Like the Nopo service, the bus arrives at Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal near the historic center. This makes Sasang a particularly practical option if your accommodation is in western Busan or if you are coming from the Gimhae Airport side of the city.

Schedules and fares can change, so check your exact departure on BusTago before traveling.

From Haeundae

If you are staying in Haeundae, you do not necessarily need to travel across Busan to Nopo or Busan Station. Direct intercity buses currently run from Haeundae to Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal.

The trip takes about 1 hour 20 minutes, and the current adult fare is about ₩10,500. This can be one of the most convenient options for travelers staying near Haeundae Beach because the bus arrives close to central Gyeongju.

Important for travelers in October 2026: Haeundae Intercity Bus Stop is expected to relocate from its current Haeundae Station area to near Jung-dong Station on Metro Line 2 in early October 2026. The move may also affect boarding arrangements or schedules.

Because the exact transition date and boarding location can change, check your ticket and departure point shortly before traveling rather than relying on an older map pin.

Which Route Is Best From Your Area in Busan?

The best route from Busan to Gyeongju often depends more on where you are staying in Busan than on the headline travel time.

Where you are stayingUsually the easiest optionWhy
Busan Station / NampoKTX from Busan StationFast access to the station and the shortest ride time
SeomyeonKTX for speed, or Nopo bus for a central Gyeongju arrivalBoth are reachable directly on Metro Line 1
Dongnae / northern BusanBus from NopoNopo is easy to reach and the bus arrives near central Gyeongju
HaeundaeDirect Haeundae intercity busAvoids crossing Busan before starting the trip
Sasang / western BusanBus from SasangThe terminal is already in western Busan and serves Gyeongju directly

If your main goal is the fastest possible journey, KTX is usually the strongest choice from central Busan. If you care more about arriving close to Hwangnidan-gil and the historic center, an intercity bus can be easier overall.

Travelers staying in Haeundae should double-check their boarding location for trips in or after October 2026 because of the planned intercity bus stop relocation.

Busan to Gyeongju Day Trip: DIY or Tour?

A DIY day trip from Busan works well if you mainly want to explore central Gyeongju. Hwangnidan-gil, Daereungwon, Cheomseongdae, Gyochon Village, and Woljeonggyo Bridge can be combined without following a fixed tour schedule.

A guided tour becomes more useful if you want to visit Bulguksa Temple or Seokguram Grotto as well as central Gyeongju in the same day. These attractions are spread farther apart, so a tour can reduce the time spent coordinating local buses and transfers.

DIY tripCentral Gyeongju, flexible sightseeing, cafés and shoppingYou arrange all local transport yourself
Guided day tourBulguksa, Seokguram and several major sights in one dayFixed meeting times and less flexibility

Current tours from Busan commonly combine several UNESCO and central Gyeongju attractions into a full-day itinerary of roughly 9–12 hours. Some also stay into the evening for illuminated sites such as Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond or Woljeonggyo Bridge.

If you prefer to wander Hwangnidan-gil at your own pace or stay overnight, traveling independently is usually more flexible. If your goal is to fit several widely separated historical sites into a single day from Busan, comparing a guided tour is worthwhile.

How to Get Back From Gyeongju to Busan

Getting back to Busan is straightforward, but check your return schedule before starting your day trip, especially if you plan to stay in Gyeongju for dinner or evening sightseeing.

For KTX, return to Gyeongju Station and take a direct train to Busan Station. Remember to allow enough time to travel from central Gyeongju back to the station.

For intercity buses, depart from Gyeongju Intercity Bus Terminal. When searching for a ticket, pay attention to the Busan arrival terminal: services may go to Nopo, Sasang, or Haeundae depending on the route.

Do not rely on a fixed “last bus” or “last train” time from an old travel guide. Departure times can vary by date, so check KORAIL or BusTago for your actual travel day. If you want to stay for Gyeongju’s evening sights, confirming your return before leaving Busan is the safest approach.

Is KTX or bus better from Busan to Gyeongju?

How far is Gyeongju Station from central Gyeongju?

Choose KTX if you are near Busan Station and want the fastest ride. Choose an intercity bus if Nopo, Sasang, or Haeundae is more convenient and you prefer to arrive close to central Gyeongju. Whichever option you choose, check the latest departure time and your return journey before leaving Busan.
